A MAN has been charged in connection with a disturbance in which a man was attacked with a hammer and had a substance thrown at him.

Officers attended after violence broke out outside the Red Lion pub in Robins Lane, Sutton on the evening of Monday, November 29 at around 7.45pm.

The disturbance reportedly began outside the pub and then escalated into surrounding roads.

A police spokeswoman said it was reported that a hammer was used and substance was thrown at the victim during the assault.

A 32-year-old man from St Helens was arrested on suspicion of assault and taken into custody.

The suspect and alleged victim both received treatment at hospital for wounds, police said.

A police spokeswoman confirmed that a man had since been charged in connection with the incident.

Thomas Cawley, of Rigsfold Drive, Parr has been charged with grievous bodily harm (Section 18 assault).

Cawley, 32, was remanded in custody on Thursday, December 2 to appear at Liverpool Crown Court at a later date.
