A ROAD and two bridges have been closed in Widnes and there is queuing traffic due to a crash this morning, Friday.

The A562 Speke Road Westbound is currently closed due to a collision between Ditton Road and the A5300 Knowsley Expressway.

The A533 Mersey Gateway Bridge is also closed westbound and the Silver Jubilee Bridge is closed northbound.

Officers attended the scene and found that a HGV had collided with a gantry near to the Hale Road slip road.

Drivers are advised to avoid the area and diversions are in place.

There are no reports of any injuries but recovery work will need to take place and the gantry will need to be checked for structural stability.

As a result of the incident the westbound carriageway is currently closed and a number of diversions are in place, including:

  • The A533 Mersey Gateway Bridge is closed westbound from the Queensway junction. Traffic is diverted via Queensway onto the M62.
  • The Silver Jubilee Bridge is closed northbound. Traffic is diverted via Waterloo Road, onto Queensway and then onto the M62.

Emergency Services are working hard to clear the closure as soon as possible but the road is expected to be closed for several hours.
