This was caused by a lorry overturning on the eastbound carriageway between junction seven for Rainhill Stoops and junction eight for Burtonwood.
It came amid a yellow weather warning for strong winds being put in place in the region.
The weather warning came into force in the north west from 9am yesterday, Friday, and will remain in place through to 6pm this evening.
Following recovery work, all lanes were reopened shortly before 9am.
Police, firefighters and ambulance crews attended the incident.
North West Motorway Police said that both the driver and passenger of the lorry were taken to hospital.
No other vehicles were involved.
In a social media post, officers showed the HGV on its side.
