THE NUMBER of anti-social behaviour and criminal damage calls decreased by 71% compared to last Halloween, Merseyside Police have confirmed.

There were 120 reports of anti-social behaviour and criminal damage made across Merseyside yesterday (October 31), compared to 426 last year.

Emergency and non-emergency calls also decreased by 24.8% and 15.9% respectively during the day's operation, while buses were targeted 90% less than in 2020.

In keeping with this declining trend, there was a 52% decrease in reports of anti-social behaviour and criminal damage on Saturday, October 30, with 279 such reports being made compared to 576 last year.

Nonetheless, there were some incidents of anti-social behaviour which officers attended over the weekend, including youths throwing fireworks and bricks at vehicles in Fazakerley, stones thrown at vehicles in Stockbridge Village and business windows being damaged in Huyton.

Commander for the policing operation, Chief Inspector Peter Clark said: “It is pleasing that we saw such a significant decrease in reports of anti-social behaviour to us, this Halloween, and I would like to thank the overwhelming majority of the public for enjoying themselves safely and responsibly.

“But there were some incidents of anti-social behaviour and criminality we will not be complacent. Every act of anti-social behaviour can have a significant impact and we understand the distress that such reckless incidents, committed by a minority of individuals, causes to communities and businesses across Merseyside.

“In many cases our officers attended promptly and were able to take action, disperse offenders and prevent further distress for people living in those communities.

“We simply will not tolerate such behaviour and I would urge anyone with any information about incidents last night to come forward.

Ahead of Bonfire Night this week, officers have committed to maintaining a visible presence in St Helens and the surrounding areas, engaging with communities and keeping people safe.

If residents experience any anti-social behaviour or have any information about any incidents reported last night, you are advised to contact police at @MerpolCC on Twitter, Merseyside Police Contact Centre on Facebook, or call 101.
