GETTING into the true spirit of Autumn, a Pumpkin growing competition took place in Newton-le-Willows over the weekend, raising £1,430 for the Honey Rose Foundation.

Residents had been growing the burly pumpkins since late May at the Rob Lane Allotments, and presented the finished products on Sunday, September 26.

The special variety of seeds were donated to allotment member Brian Pelly and competitors were only informed of their seeds four weeks ago.

Everyone is said to really have enjoyed the challenge of growing the pumpkins to their largest size, with Gaynor Hope's winning pumpkin weighing in at a colossal 40.60kg.

During the four month nurturing, £1,430 was raised for the Honey Rose Foundation, a local charity which provides people at the end of their life with any wish they desire.

Presenting the winning prize, Councillor for Newton, Seve Gomez-Asptron said: "It was amazing to see the produce grown at the allotments, and to see how hard all the members have worked to grow such massive pumpkins!

"It was great to present the prize to Gaynor, although I imagine everyone in Newton-le-Willows will be sick of pumpkin soup by Christmas!

"Anyone interested in supporting the allotments can pop in most weekends and chat to the committee. And well done to them on raising money for a fantastic cause."
