WITH England’s Euro 2020 quarter-final against Ukraine at 8pm tonight, football fans and pubs across the town are gearing up for another huge game.

After England’s historic win over Germany on Tuesday – the first victory in a knockout game against the rivals since 1966 – anticipation has been building.

Fans have been gathering at local pubs throughout the tournament, watching the match on screens indoors and in outdoor spaces, as venues continue to follow Covid restrictions.

Rain showers – with possible thunder – are forecast for later today, meaning shelter could be needed for anyone watching outside.

Among the places where fans will gather is the Turks Head on Morley Street and landlord Daryl Arrowsmith is expecting a “great turnout” in front of their big screen and beer garden.

As the Euros have progressed, the pub has been “consistently busy” yet has always been able to follow the Covid rules and guidance in place.

With restrictions on capacity, however, Daryl advises punters to visit neighbouring pub the Cowley Vaults if they are unable to secure a seat.

After getting this far through the pandemic and navigating the venues through the previous England games, staff at both pubs are confident they can manage the busy atmosphere while keeping everyone safe.

Looking forward to an England win and beyond, Daryl added: “We can’t wait for the July 19 – hopefully Freedom Day [with no Covid restrictions] – and in the meantime England can hopefully take us all the way.”

If England can overcome Ukraine in Italy they will then face either the Czech Republic or Denmark in the semi-final on Wednesday.

The Euro 2020 final takes places at Wembley next Sunday.
