THE woman who died in the crash on the Rainford bypass on Sunday was in her 50s, police have confirmed.

A police investigation has been launched following the fatal collision which took place on the northbound carriageway of the Rainford bypass at its junction with St Helens Road.

At around 12.55pm on Sunday, officers were called to the scene to reports of a collision involving a grey Ford Mondeo and a grey Vauxhall Corsa.

Emergency services attended and a man and two women who were travelling in the Corsa, were treated at the scene for serious injuries.

Sadly one of the women, a passenger, died at the scene.

Her next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers at this time.

The two other occupants of the vehicle have been taken to hospital for further treatment.

The driver of the Mondeo stopped at the scene and is assisting with enquiries.

The Rainford bypass was closed between Mossborough Road and Windle Island, while investigations took place.
