PEOPLE have been expressing their shock and sadness after a woman died in a crash on the Rainford Bypass on Sunday afternoon.

The woman was a passenger in a grey Vauxhall Corsa that was involved in a crash with a grey Ford Mondeo at about 12.55pm.

Officers were called to the bypass, to reports of a collision involving a grey Ford Mondeo and a grey Corsa.

Another woman and a man who were in the Corsa were also treated for serious injuries.

The age or identity of the woman who died have not been released at this stage.

Her next of kin have been informed and they are being supported by specially trained officers.

From the location of the cordons, the scene of the crash appeared to be the stretch of the bypass near to the junctions with St Helens Road and Mill Lane, Rainford although details of how the incident unfolded have yet to be released, with the investigation at its early stages.

Some people who turned to social media to express their sadness highlighted the section of the dual-carriageway as an accident blackspot.

A crash that left a man in his 70s with serious injuries happened on a nearby stretch of the road a fortnight ago.

Commenting on seeing the emergency services presence, people said the incident had been on their minds all day and sent messages of condolence to the victim’s family.

Some were left in tears after seeing crews at the scene and police setting up the cordon.

They said the incident was “shocking” and “heartbreaking”.

Police said the two other occupants of the Corsa were taken to hospital for further treatment.

The driver of the Mondeo stopped at the scene and is assisting with enquiries.

The Rainford bypass was closed between Mossborough Road and Windle Island, while investigations took place.
