THE M62 has reopened after being closed in both directions due to a police incident this afternoon, Tuesday.

Both the westbound and eastbound carriageways were shut at junction nine for Winwick shortly after 5pm.

A spokesman for Cheshire Police said the incident related to concern over the safety of a person on the bridge above the motorway.

But it has since been resolved following the arrival of police and Highways England traffic officers at the scene.

A spokesman for North West Motorway Police said: “The police incident on the M62 at junction nine has been safely resolved, and the closures have now been lifted.

“Police are now supporting the person involved.

“A huge thank you to the HGV driver who remained at the incident, supporting our officers and helping to secure the scene.”

Vehicles were diverted via the entry and exit slip roads while the closure was in place.

Despite opening, queuing traffic remains, with tailbacks stretching to junction eight for Burtonwood eastbound and junction 11 for Birchwood westbound.

Motorists are experiencing delays of more than 45 minutes westbound and 30 minutes eastbound.

There were also delays on the M6 northbound between junction 20 for the M56 at Lymm and junction 21 for Woolston due to a three-vehicle crash.

Lane four was blocked, but has since reopened. Thankfully no injuries were reported.

Meanwhile, long delays and queueing traffic is being reported on the M56 eastbound due to earlier accident involving three cars.

The collision occurred between junction 14 for Chester Services and Helsby and junction 12 for Runcorn.

All lanes have been re-opened after the road was blocked for around 25 minutes until 5.40pm, although congestion remains to junction 15 for the M53.
