A BUSINESS has gone carbon negative in a bid to tackle the global crisis.

Vegums, based at Bold Business Park, which sells vegan gummy bear multivitamins, says it has a fierce plan in place to remove the previous carbon emissions and carbon that will be emitted in 2021.

This includes direct emissions for the entire supply chain, from product manufacture to delivery.

To become carbon negative, Vegums have partnered with regulated non-profit NGOs (non-government organisations) across the world, who work with local communities to plant trees whilst reducing extreme poverty and combating deforestation.

They hire and train villagers to plant trees, giving them a consistent income to provide for their families and support the local economy.

Each tree planted absorbs 0.3 tonnes of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere whilst also overcoming the negative effects of deforestation on animal populations and the environment.

Managing director of Vegums, John Rushton said: “The climate crisis is real and it’s going to affect all of us. If the global temperature rises beyond 2.5°C, it will cause irreversible damage.

"Vegums couldn’t just stand by and let this happen.

“We created fully biodegradable packaging, cleaned beaches and planted trees, but we knew we could do more. Settling for carbon neutral wasn’t good enough.

"The only way we could truly make a difference was by removing more CO2 than we emitted.”

Lisa Miceli, marketing manager of Vegums added: “Since I joined Vegums, we have strived to be the most environmentally friendly company there is.

"This is a huge milestone for us, we will continue to offset carbon as Vegums grows, ensuring we remain carbon negative.

"Vegums has achieved carbon neutrality primarily due to investing in offsets that remove carbon that have already been emitted. The focus has then been shifted towards removing carbon that will be emitted in 2021, which has been calculated on current business growth.

"To ensure Vegums has achieved carbon negativity, more carbon has been offsetted than has been emitted and will be emitted in 2021.

"Every step will be monitored, and if Vegums do grow significantly, then plans are in place to continue to offset carbon to ensure that Vegums remain carbon negative."
