SAINTS coach Kristian Woolf was pleased to send the fans home from their first live game in 14 months with a win.

Five tries - from Alex Walmsley, Theo Fages, Louie McCarthy Scarsbrook, Kevin Naiqama and Regan Grace - with none in reply, saw Saints see off the Salford Red Devils 28-0.

A scrappy first half, with too much dropped ball, made for uncomfortable viewing at times for the 4,000 who had filed into Totally Wicked Stadium for the first time since March 2020.

But the game was never in doubt with four second-half tries and a second clean sheet of the season.

Woolf was delighted to hear the fans' roar.

St Helens Star:

"Having the fans back was outstanding," Woolf said.

"Hearing the reception when the players ran out for their warm-up and seeing all the smiles on their faces made the hairs stand up on your back.

"Also the terraces singing the songs, it was outstanding to have that back - to actually hear it and feel it reminds us of how much we missed it.

"It was great seeing people walk across the bridge and into the ground and it was great that we could put a good performance on for them."

St Helens Star:

Salford were kept at an arm's length and were denied any real opportunities to score.

"I thought we defended terrifically," Woolf said.

"We made it hard for them to get out of their end and, when we had to scramble, and save things on the line we did a really good job.

"When we put our sets together, we attacked really well, but forever reason we were loose with some errors around the play the ball and we lost a bit of momentum when we had chances to put them under some real pressure.

"That took a little bit away from our attack, but when we put our sets together I thought we did that well so I am happy overall.

"It was a great try after half-time from Theo that put us on the front foot for the second half.

"I have to give him a wrap for that, he sits on the right side defensively and pops up on the left, takes them on and finds some support and then finishes the try. That was outstanding from him.

"That put us on the front foot at the start of the second half."
