A WOMAN whose body was found in a property died from "acute alcohol intoxication", a post mortem examination has confirmed.

Emergency services were called to an address on Liverpool Row in Newton-le-Willows at around 5am on the morning of Sunday, March 29, 2020.

A woman in her 50s was found dead at the property.

Police launched an investigation into the death, which was initially treated as "unexplained".

The Star reported that a post-mortem examination was conducted but the cause of death had been withheld pending toxicology tests.

A Merseyside Police spokeswoman said the results have revealed that the cause of the woman’s death was due to acute alcohol intoxication.

Meanwhile, Paul Cosford, 50, of Clarence Street, Newton-le-Willows has been charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm (ABH).

This is in relation to an allegation of assault prior to the woman's death.

Cosford appeared at Liverpool Crown Court on Tuesday, April 20.

He pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The case was adjourned until December 13, 2021.
