A DAD-OF-THREE who fell from a rock formation - breaking most of the bones in his body - is praising the St Helens community for sending messages of support during his recovery.

Imran Chowdhury was training for a walk up Kilimanjaro for the NHS and another charity by taking on the challenge of The Trinnacle landmark in Saddleworth Moor on February 23, when he blacked out and fell down 200 metres.

After he fell from the gritstone stack, kind passers by helped him and it took an 18 strong mountain rescue crew several hours to pull his body to a position where a Yorkshire air ambulance crew could get him to hospital.

The 36-year-old, who until recently ran The Pink Pearl in Newton-le-Willows and is well known in the area, woke up one month after his fall in Sheffield’s Northern General Hospital.

He was in intensive care in a coma for three weeks with injuries to every bone in his body except from those in his left arm, and was told he is "lucky to be alive".

Speaking to the Star, he said: “I’ve been told by doctors that I’m lucky to be alive, they didn’t think when I went in hospital with all of my injuries that I would be here today.

The list given to him after he woke up

"While I was climbing down The Trinnacle I just blacked out. I still don't know what the cause was but when I fell I damaged everything in my body apart from my left arm.

“I broke my right leg in six different places and they thought they would have to take it off, but fortunately they have managed to save it, I have broken bones in my left leg, the heel on my left foot, broken the bone at the top of my right arm, my right shoulder blade, broken a bone in my spine and broken my skull with one bone moving towards my brain – which they thought even if I did survive I’d have suffered brain damage but again I’m lucky and I’m OK.

"I was also separated from my family for the longest time during this difficult period when they basically thought I wouldn't make it due to coronavirus, so it was difficult, but my own determination, mental strength and the support of others really got us all through."

As well as his positive outlook, dad-of-three Imran credits the support he’s had from the St Helens community via social media for keeping him going on his journey to recovery - so much so that just three months after his life changing injuries, he’s now recovering at home.

He said: “When I was running the Pink Pearl I did a lot for charity, that’s just who I am as a person, but that made people know me and when I put on social media what happened to me, so many people sent lovely messages to keep my spirits up.

“I’d like to thank everyone for their kind prayers and support. Its been great for me mentally and emotionally. I felt this has helped me mentally and emotionally a lot.”

Imran, who lives in Oldham, is now raising funds for the hospital.

He added: "I cannot thank the doctors and nurses enough or repay them for everything that was done to save me, but I would like to raise some fund to support the hospital which has helped me in my critical time. I would really love to thank them for everything they have done, I'm so grateful to so many people."
