DETECTIVES have released two suspects on bail after a man was stabbed in the leg on Friday evening in what police described as an "appalling attack".

As reported by the Star, police sealed off an area of Lord Street - an estate located off College Street, St Helens.

Officers had received a report at about 5pm that a man had been attacked at an address.

Emergency services found a 45-year-old man with stab wounds to his leg.

He was taken to hospital for his injuries, however, a police spokesperson confirmed he has since been released.

A 42-year-old man and a 37-year-old woman, both from St Helens, were arrested on suspicion on section 18 wounding, an offence also knowns as inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent.

They were taken into custody for questioning and have since been released on bail as further investigations are carried out.

Officers sealed off part of the scene on Friday, with officers stationed at either side of a cordon while forensic investigations at the front of a terraced house took place.

Police are continuing to appeal for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward.

In a statement released to the Star on Friday, Detective Inspector Leanne Hobin said: “This was an appalling attack leaving a man hospitalised.

“I would like to reassure the community that we have two people in custody and our investigation is ongoing.”

On Monday, a police spokeswoman told the Star: "The 42-year-old man and the 37-year-old woman arrested on Friday have now been released on bail pending further enquiries.

"The 45-year-old victim is out of hospital.
