GOLFERS in St Helens were delighted to get back out on the fairways on Monday as courses reopened as the coronavirus lockdown was eased.

Golf courses were among the sports venues able to reopen this week under the Prime Minister's coronavirus lockdown exit roadmap.

And golfers at St Helens' courses were keen to get back in the swing of things.

The Star reported last summer after golf clubs reported a surge in membership applications following the first lockdown, with Grange Park Golf Club appearing on BBC News to discuss the issue.

On Monday, golfers got back into the rhythm after a long winter away from the course.

Golfers back on the course at Sherdley Park

Ahead of the reopening, Sherdley Park Golf Club said: "Our greenkeepers have been working tirelessly throughout lockdown to make sure that the course is in the best condition possible for our return!

"Dust off the clubs & get ready for what we hope will be a great return to golf for all.

"All tee times go live 15 days in advance at 8pm and have to be booked online."

Meanwhile, Grange Park also welcomed the return to action.

The club said: "It has been a long wait but finally the day has arrived.

"Fantastic to have our members back with us today!"

Meanwhile, Haydock Park Golf Club in Newton-le-Willows also shared footage of golfers' return.

The first tee shot of the day was shared on social media, albeit a second attempt, with the golfer taking a 'Mulligan' after the first in perhaps an example of post-lockdown rustiness.

And Berrington Hall Golf Club in Rainford also shared its delight at seeing players back.

The club tweeted: "Great to see people back at the course yesterday and looking forward to a busy week ahead, we go on full tees from Saturday".
