THE PANDEMIC has been a trying time for many of us.

However, some people have truly stood out during this time, supporting us and cheering us up when things seemed bleak.

For some, national heroes such as Sir Captain Tom Moore would have been their lockdown hero.

However, for others their hero will be much closer to home.

We asked our readers: ‘Who has been your lockdown hero’.

Barrow

The people in and around Barrow had overwhelming love for their family.

Sara Bilton said: “My partner, Cristi has been my rock also he's been so calm and very helpful”

She also thought that Kath Albury deserved a special mention.

She added : “She went out of her way to go to the chemist when I caught Covid to get me what I needed.

“I didn't ask her to do anything for me I've already said this but if I could give her a medal I would.”

Rebecca Palfreyman had a lot of self-love.

She said: “I realised I can boss being a parent with so little help and so little communication from the world.”

Amanda Gavin’s lockdown hero is much smaller than most.


She said: “My son Kaiden sailed through all his operations through lockdown and all my family and friends, for messaging with well wishes and getting us all through.”

Margaret Threlfall said her lockdown hero was Steve Scrogham.

She said: “My superhero throughout this pandemic is our lovely friend Steve Scrogham.

"When my husband became ill with Covid, he did all of my shopping with doorstep delivery.”

Linzi Chapman said her daughter has been her lockdown hero.

She explained: “ [She has kept]  me sane and has been a star at doing her school work… She has produced some amazing work i have loved being her teacher. I will miss her next week, she’s such a star.”

Michael Vandom said a Barrow business has been his saviour in lockdown.

He said: “Masons Butchers kept me, my gran and my parents supplied with food every week.”

Beth Olliver said: “All of the staff at SLBC and SCBU.... Also Burnley NICU, Liverpool womens, GOSH and Alder hay hospital!”

Carlisle

Jean Foster said her husband has been her lockdown hero.

She said: “My husband who has done all our food shopping (he hates shopping of any description) he’s got birthday/celebration cards /presents for family as I’ve been shielding-as well as working 5 days a week.

Victoria Turnbull had positive things to say about Roo Bannister.

She said: “I’m voting for this lady because she has given me a reason for getting out of bed again… she has helped me and many others to stay sane in an otherwise mental world.”

People had a lot of love for  Deborah Earl and Stephen Carney, the owners of Old Hall Café in Carlisle, who delivered school meals to children in lockdown.

One of our reader’s said: “They've helped everyone in the local community, fed the children, looked after all of us that have to shield and kept the local kids smiling throughout.

“Without Deborah and Stephen at the old hall café many of the families in the area would have been left destitute with no one to turn to.”

Stephen Kenny said: “Anyone that has being working since last march...all deserve a bonus and a paid vacation...thanks to all who have being risking their lives every day from medical staff to grocery workers”

Nicola Bell said her heroes are “all of the teachers at Upperby Primary School.

She said:  “All the teachers at Upperby Primary School for keeping some normality for the children who have attended during the lockdown.

“Especially Mrs Hodgkins who has sent out emails/messages to parents daily offering all kinds of support. She has shown great care in the welfare of both parents and children.”

One reader said her lockdown hero isn’t even a human.

 

Amanda Blaire said:”Little did i know how much I was going to need Saidie during lockdown. She has been our reason to get our in the fresh air.

“Hail, rain or snow....we went out as a family, we talked, we laughed, we ran- and we forgot for a while about being cooped up inside.

“Sadie is not only my best friend, she is my family’s saviour and has saved us from stepping on eachother’s toes so much.”

Aliison Bayles said Lambkins Day Nursery & Pre-School Centre.

“Without them I don’t think I would have coped as well... they have been utterly amazing still welcoming all the children and keeping things as normal as possible”

South Lakeland

 

Emma Curry said:” All our home care assistants at Westmorland Homecare who have carried on providing exceptional care to the most vulnerable and elderly in our community all the way through this pandemic.”

Nic White had high praise for the Facebook groupMax Out in the Lake District.

She said: “Their walks and live posts every day have kept so many of us going.”

Dave Gordon had a lot of self-love, writing: “Me without a doubt me”.
