THREE teenage boys have been jailed over a shooting of a 17-year-old in Prescot.

The boy suffered a gunshot wound to the abdomen after he was shot in an alleyway off Station Road on the afternoon of Monday, January 20 last year.

Police were called to the area after the teenager was shot near a housing estate at 4.50pm.

He was taken to hospital with the wound to his abdomen.

After the shooting, police cordons were put in place over a wide area, including on Station Road, the alley between Station Road and Chester Street and on Cables Retail Park close to the Next store.

A boy, now aged 16, and two boys aged 17, from Huyton, were arrested and later charged in relation to the shooting.

The three boys were sentenced after they were convicted of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

One of the 17-year-old boys was sentenced to seven years and nine months' detention in a youth offenders' institute.

The 16-year-old was sentenced to eight years and four months' in a young offenders' institute.

Meanwhile, the other 17-year-old was sentenced to nine years, with an extended three years on licence.

Police have welcomed the sentencings, which make a total of more than 25 years between them.

Detective Chief Inspector at Firearm Investigation Matt Smith said: “The offenders travelled to Prescot from Huyton to carry out the shooting in the afternoon in front of members of the public including children.

“They have left a teenager with life-changing internal injuries, and the physical and mental scars this has caused will last a lifetime.

“I want to assure people in the community that we’ll continue to act on all information provided on firearms across Merseyside, and take decisive action to make sure we take guns off the streets and put the people prepared to carry, store and use them before the courts.

“Keep supporting what we are doing and you will see the difference where you live, with suspects apprehended, groups disrupted and weapons seized.”
