Detective Inspector Leanne Hobin said: “This incident will have no doubt caused a great deal of distress to the victim, who is an elderly gentleman living alone and has been shielding since March.

“The stolen electrical items were vital for connecting him to his friends and family during a lengthy period of self-isolation. It is particularly cruel to have taken them from him, and we are determined to return them and bring the offender to justice.

“We are appealing for anyone who was in the Laffak Road area of St Helens in the early hours Sunday morning to contact us if they saw anything or anyone suspicious. Similarly it is vital that we find anyone who was driving or walking in the area who may have captured something, either on their mobile phone or dash cam, to get in touch.”
