POLICE have urged people to follow the rules of the new coronavirus lockdown as they stepped up patrols in St Helens.

Officers issued a statement today (Wednesday) to ask people to follow the regulations implemented.

Police expressed thanks to those abiding by the restrictions and said there has been a "small minority" who have flouted them.

There have been reports of some youths gathering in St Helens town centre.

Officers warned that £200 fines will be issued to any rule-breakers of any age, with increases for repeat offenders.

In a statement on Facebook, St Helens Police said: "We have increased local patrols due to the new COVID restrictions, it is our duty as police officers to keep the community of St Helens safe.

"We know these are difficult times for everyone and can appreciate how hard the past the year has been.

"Firstly we would like to thank the members of the public who have been abiding by the rules that the government have set.

"However, there is small minority of people who have not been. We have been receiving reports of youths gathering in the town centre.

"The law now states that people should not be leaving their house without an essential reason, the rules are as followed: You are able to leave the house to shop for basic necessities; travel to work (if you cannot do so from home); exercise with your household (or support bubble) or one other person; meet your support bubble or childcare bubble where necessary but only if you're legally permitted to form one; seek medical assistance and attend education or childcare (for those eligible)."

It added: "With rising numbers of infection it is critical now more than ever to keep yourselves, family and friends safe. We ask again please follow the rules implemented.

"Anyone who is found not following the rules will receive a £200 fine regardless of age, repeat offenders will receive increased amounts.
