SHOCKED readers are warning others to be careful travelling through parks at night following a report that a woman was raped in Taylor Park on Saturday.

Officers were called at 10.50pm on Saturday, November 28, following allegations that a woman had been raped by an unknown man in the park.

The victim is being supported by specialist officers as police enquiries continue.

Park-goers say an area around the Ranger Centre, close to the park's lake, was cordoned off on Sunday morning as forensic teams carried out an investigation.

A 32-year-old man from St Helens was arrested nearby on suspicion of rape and possession of an offensive weapon.

This man has since been eliminated from enquiries in connection with the rape and released under investigation in connection with possessing an offensive weapon.

Readers were appalled by the news that emerged this morning.

They offered messages of condolence to the victim and messages of warning to others via social media.

Kath Parr said: "This is dreadful - it should be safe to go anywhere but it isn't especially dark deserted places so many awful people about. Hope you get through this horrific experience sweetheart xx"

Clare Rooney added: "It saddens me that the majority of the comments on here are about having to warn women to be careful when walking alone. We should have the right to go anywhere we choose without having to live in fear of being attacked by a man."

Amanda Gardam added: "Sending all my love to the lady in question. No male has the right to do this."
