POLICE have launched a probe after an abandoned BMW car was set alight on Sunday night.

Officers and firefighters were called after a car was on fire on Garswood Old Road at around 10pm.

Crews spent around half an hour at the scene as they tackled the flames with a hose reel jet.

The investigation into the fire, which is being treated as a "suspected malicious ignition", was handed over to the police.

A Merseyside Police spokeswoman said: "We were called last night (Sunday) following reports a BMW car had reportedly been abandoned and was on fire on Garswood Old Road.

"The fire is being treated as suspected malicious ignition.

"The car has now been recovered and enquiries are being carried out.

A Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman added: "Firefighters were called to Garswood Old Road, St Helens, on Sunday, November 29.

"Crews were alerted at 9.59pm and on scene at 10.07pm. One fire engine attended.

"On arrival crews found one vehicle on fire. Firefighters used a hose reel jet to extinguish the fire.

"Fire crews left the scene at 10.36pm and the incident was handed over to Merseyside Police."
