THE Star’s feature about readers’ memories of the former Helena House building has stirred people into reflecting on St Helens town centre in times gone by.
So here are a few more archive pictures that hark back to the 70s and 80s.
A 1980s picture showing the hustle and bustle of Bridge Street, St Helens, which included stores such as Burton and Tyrers and the Savoy Cinema Picture: Anthony Liptrot
Above is a busy scene from Bridge Street when it had anchor stores such as Burtons (on the corner with Church Street) and Tyrers department store.
Further down the street, you can just about make out the Savoy cinema. Elsewhere on this page there’s a picture of the Fleece Hotel the Church Street. We’d love to hear your memories of that landmark, another which was consigned to St Helens’ past.
The Fleece Hotel on Church Street was a major St Helens venue back in the day
And there’s also street scenes of Ormskirk Street and Church Street at its junction with Hardshaw Street.
