SO where were you when Jack Welsby snatched Grand Final glory for Saints after the hooter had sounded?

In your living room, we hazard a guess, is the obvious answer given this was a final played while still under a national lockdown.

Most likely you were glued to the television screen, listening to radio commentary or following the unfolding drama online.

In years to come (just as we talk about that famous Wide to West play off try of 2000) we’ll remember that moment when young Jack touched down – the nervous wait for the video ref to give the try the nod – before going barmy, screaming with joy, perhaps dancing a little jig and texting our mates.

We’ll talk about Welsby's Winner in the Lockdown Final of 2020 as one of the sport’s great, heart-stopping finishes that came at the end of this crazy, tumultuous year of the pandemic and lockdowns.

Of course, we wished we had been there.

But the sport being played and the season being completed was the most important thing.

And we should be grateful to those players, officials and staff who have kept the wheels turning – and ultimately gave us this magical moment.

The kind of moment that makes sport so special to those who love it.

It was a great game too, low-scoring but still rugby league at its best. It was tense, incredibly so, as we watched from our sofas, decked out in our Saints colours.

Johnny Vegas shared his celebrations

It was one of those games where you dared not budge from the screen – it was so tight, so absorbing.

As the final wore on, you felt that one moment would turn it. A mistake, maybe one moment of brilliance would prove decisive.

And after Saints had managed to tie things up at 4-4 with another Lachlan Coote penalty, came the incredible climax.

We dared not look as Wigan's Zak Hardaker lined up a long distance penalty. Then we sighed with such relief as the kick fell short.

Moments later Tommy Makinson’s drop kick attempt rebounded off a post and Welsby arrived like a train to beat Wigan’s Bevan French to the bouncing ball.

By then we were all leaping about, going crazy; some of us being warned not to disturb our neighbours, wake up our kids or frighten the pets.

Emily Gaskell shared this pic with us on Facebook - she was one of the many celebrating at home. "No idea who was more excited," she wrote.

There was of course a pause and the anxious wait for the video referee to give the try the nod – but that was just followed by another bout of wild living room celebrations.

It also prompted the flood of victorious texts, calls or messages to the pals or loved ones we wished we’d been able to share the moment with.

You’ve probably watched the Johnny Vegas video – we reckon that reflected the emotions that many of us were showing.

We asked for you to put that crazy finish into words – and here’s what you said.

Lee Hughes: "No matter how bad life gets, you can always rely on the saints to lift the spirits. Well done boys. Magic."

Jim Sumner: "I was told to quieten down we've got neighbours, no chance, after the odd beverage it was we are the champions AGAIN, well done super SAINTS."

Tracey Leyland: "What a finish to a Grand Final.. It will go down in history... And thanks Saints for nearly giving me a heart attack."

Chris Lamb: "Better than wide to west. Saints have lifted our Town like no one else could. Absolutely incredible result which was so close. I'm sure I'm not the only one who was having palpitations."

Lesley Pounceby: "Stood on the dog's tail and made him jump x"

Tom Ali: "I was screaming that loud my son came down to see if I was ok."

Daniel Hoult: "Well done young Jack no rugby coach could coach that into a player that was pure heart he was playing with he wanted it and got it well done I will speaking of this try when I am older like lots of other people well done."

Cath O'Neill: "Reminds me of Wide to West: thought it was over, extra time looming, hooter has gone then BOOM we score.

"One for the memory banks. Thank you Saints."

Brian Taylor: "What a terrific rugby league game, both teams were sensational, one of the best games ever, either team could have won right up to the final whistle.

"If it had been a draw both teams should have shared the trophy, because neither team deserved to lose."

Paul Brophy: "What A cracker of A game,.. I think 50yrs of following the mighty Saints. That was the most intense game I've seen. Hardly drank, as didn't want to go the fridge, in case I missed something. GET IN COYS."
