According to a court sheet, Thompson was given the jail sentence as the offence was considered "so serious". It says he was found with the knife outside the address of his ex-partner after police had been called to an incident at the address.
As well as being committed to prison for 16 weeks for the offence, the 35-year-old was also ordered to pay a £128 to victim services.
His guilty plea was taken into account upon sentencing.
