A PLANNING application has been submitted to extend a clubhouse as part of a sports club's renovation project.

Proposals seek to create an extension to the clubhouse at Windleshaw Sports Club on Windleshaw Road, Dentons Green.

A side and rear single-storey extension has been proposed for the building, which contains function rooms and changing facilities.

The extension would enable an extra separate shower facility, additional toilets, a storage room and a laundry room.

Earlier this year, plans for the creation of a 50-seater grandstand at the club, along with two porta-cabins; a new access road and an 80-space car park along with new hardstanding around the football pitch and six floodlights were approved by the council.

St Helens Star:

This site is of great historical significance in the town, being the headquarters of St Helens Cricket Club for many years and the home of Saints until their move to Knowsley Road for the 1890-91 season.

The site hosted the first-ever league fixture, played in the first-ever senior rugby competition in the Northern counties in 1889.

From the early 1900s, cricket was played there.

However, since 2014 football has been played on the site, with FC St Helens based there.

The latest planning application, submitted by FC St Helens chairman Steve Leather, said: "The extension to the already existing community building for sport will

provider greater opportunities for residents to participate in sports and recreation.

"In addition, this will further enhance the safety of precipitants of the site in the protection against COVID-19 and enable social distancing from sporting bubble organisations".

A determination deadline on plans has been set for January 6, 2021.
