PUPILS from Haydock High School are creating a community Window Art Mural in Church Square Shopping Centre which will encourage visitors to help stop the spread of COVID-19.
UC Crew is an award-winning Social Action Hip Hop organisation based in St Helens that have been in operation since 2004 and specialise in community development and making the community a better place. Using Hip Hop art forms as a tool for change, the alternative youth service programme works with children, young people, young carers, families, men and women.

UC Crew specialise in using the Hip Hop art forms of Breaking (known as Break Dance), Graffiti Art, Rapping and DJing, we also incorporate Parkour, Circus Skills, Teambuilding, Hip Hop theatre, Street Dance, Special FX Makeup, Filming, Photography and local history into our regular delivery.
During half-term, UC Crew have partnered with St Helens Council and Church Square Shopping Centre to develop a Window Art Meme Mural project at the Centre.
The project has been funded by Merseyside Police Crime Commissioner to help engage young people in positive activities that make the community a safer place to work, live and play. The community art project was opened up to pupils to Haydock High School to engage them in the local community, provide new artistic opportunities and give pupils a chance to raise awareness to stop the spread of COVID-19 in St Helens through art.
Tom Glynn from UC Crew said: “I’m delighted to be working in partnership with Church Square Shopping Centre and St Helens Council to provide an amazing opportunity for young people to make a difference in their community using art.”
Steve Brogan, Church Square Centre manager, added: “The UC Crew provide amazing opportunities to young people in the local community, so it is brilliant that we have been able to partner with them and utilise our space to engage young people in positive community activities, particular during what has been a challenging year for many. The message to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 is also vital to keep our community safe and it’s great that we can spread this message through art.”
Cllr Jeanie Bell, cabinet member for safer, stronger communities, said: “This is a fantastic scheme involving young people who are always keen to get involved and support the local community when given the opportunity.
"It is fantastic to work with UC Crew, this is just one of the many amazing projects supporting young people that they have provided over the years in St Helens. The message they have helped to create is really important and a reminder that we have to take Covid-19 seriously and we that all must work together to protect each other.”
