ATHERLEIGH and Atherton are among the wards with the highest number of coronavirus cases in the borough says the council's latest weekly COVID-19 tracker.

The council has released its latest breakdown data of cases which are for the week October 17 to 23.

In the seven day period Wigan borough had 2,086 new cases identified, which is a rate of 634.7 per 100,000 of the population. It is also the second highest rate of new cases in Greater Manchester and is higher than seen in the north west (447.3 per 100,000) and nationally (England’s rate is 221.6 per 100,000).

The council says the number of new cases has increased compared to this time last week and is higher than the rates seen regionally and nationally

Atherton ward saw 109 cases during the period, a rate of 696 per 100,000.

Meanwhile, Atherleigh had 95 cases at 776 per 100,000.

The Journal reported that The Hamiltons Care Home, part of Atherleigh ward, has had a recent outbreak among residents and staff.

Hindley saw 105 cases (768 per 100,000).

Meanwhile, at the other end of the scale, among Leigh and surrounding areas, Golborne and Lowton West saw the lowest number with 47 (392 per 100,000).
