PLANS have been drawn up to redevelop a recently closed social club.

Proposals have been submitted to St Helens Council seeking to subdivide the former Rockware Social Club on Shaw Street in the town centre.

Applicant Mr S Lawler has submitted two applications relating to potential redevelopment to town hall planners, drawn up by planning agents Taurus Design Services.

Due to the current climate, with converting premises for speculative development made more difficult, two applications have been submitted in tandem to ensure the property remains flexible to prospective tenants, the Star understands.

One application has been submitted for two industral units at the site.

However, due to the current coronavirus restrictions and the possibility of retaining the front portion of the building for use as a sports bar making limited commercial short-term sense, an additional application has been submitted with the scope for a convenience type store at the premises.

These proposals state that the ground floor layout would consist of four units; two for light industrial use with an open plan workshop.

Under these plans, there would also be a shop and for a takeaway at the building.

A design and access statement  says: "The site was previously a social club and recently closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic".

"The appearance of the building will remain in keeping with similar dwellings and business premises within the surrounding area".

Roller shutters are proposed to be used for workshop areas.

The planning applications are on public consultation until Wednesday, November 4.
