WHERE can you get the most succulent, satisfying steak in Warrington with consistently good service?

That is what we have been asking readers for our feature, 6 of the Best, which has returned after the lockdown to support businesses and eateries in incredibly difficult times.

There will be a different category for the feature each week and on Tuesday we asked for your favourite pubs and restaurants when it comes a quality cut of meat.

We were again inundated with entries to reveal the below six winners based on the volume of your nominations and messages with the most detail as to why a particular eatery stood out.

1. The Waterside, Centre Park

The riverside pub, owned by Greene King but run by Warrington couple Amanda and Daniel Crilly, received the most nominations – with Pickering Arms a close second.

Steaks on the menu, including the signature 'dipping steak', are said to be 'cooked perfectly', 'tender and full of flavour' and 'beautifully seasoned and presented'.

Warrington Guardian:

One comment said: "The Waterside is the beat place for service, quality of food and atmosphere.

"The steaks are the best I've had – cooked perfectly, tender and full of flavour. I have had the ribeye, the sirloin and the fillet all perfectly cooked. I'll keep going back there."

Another added: "The dipping steak is a triumph on a plate."

2. Pickering Arms, Thelwall

A real community pub, Pickering Arms was named north west’s best neighbours in 2018 – a prize organised by Co-op Insurance and Neighbourhood Watch – in the same year they won a Warrington Guardian Food and Drink Award.

Now their guests think their steaks are worthy of accolades too.

A contributor said: "My whole family have enjoyed the Picks’ steaks. My favourite is the ribeye – juicy and always cooked to order. I would highly recommend any of the steaks, well presented and reasonably priced."

Another added: "Quality produce, perfectly cooked and wonderful staff."

3. Expédition, Stockton Heath

A relative newcomer to the Warrington food and drink scene, Expédition in the Victoria Buildings, London Road, has quickly made an impression.

It is described as an entertainment restaurant and bar as live music was a firm fixture at the venue before the coronavirus crisis.

But it is still a favourite for quality food in a contemporary setting where provenance is important.

A customer said: "Expédition in Stockton Heath serve up amazing steaks consistently. The 1kg tomahawk is legendary and, importantly, all the steaks come from a local supplier."

Warrington Guardian:

Another guest added: "Always great to know where your food comes from. Locally sourced steak from Houghton’s of Warrington, traceable back to the farm in Tarporley.

"All steaks cooked to order. The rump is consistently sublime and if you fancy taking it to the next level, the tomahawk is a must and great to share."

4. The Ring O Bells, Church Street

This pub's steaks were described as 'melt in your mouth' and 'beautiful'.

One voter said: "The Ring O Bells has to be up there. The head chef there is incredible. I am very fussy with steak as I like it blue and most of the time it will come out rare rather than blue.

"But my steak there was spot on and the homemade chunky chips on the side with peppercorn sauce was a perfect treat topped off with grilled tomato and mushroom. Perfection."

Another added: "The steak falls apart it’s so tender and delicious. Love it every time."

5. White Hart, Sankey Street

The hot tip for the popular town centre pub is the buffalo steak with 'gorgeous proper chips'.

Voters also mentioned how White Hart steaks are always cooked perfectly to order.

Warrington Guardian:

One contributor said: "Beautifully presented, always cooked exactly to my liking. Consistently the tastiest steak by far even during busy times."

Another added: "I’ve never once had a bad steak at the White Hart always cooked exactly how I want it and well seasoned."

6. The Station House, Padgate

The Padgate pub – formerly The Stocks – completely reinvented itself with a completely new look and an American-style a la carte menu a little over a year ago.

A customer said: "Station House steaks are always cooked as I like and they serve the best chips alongside. Never a dry steak and gorgeous sauces too."

Another voter added: "Fabulous steaks and amazing staff who make you feel welcome and safe as soon as you walk in the venue."
