A SUSPECT allegedly tried to headbutt and spit at a police officer in St Helens town centre.

A patrol car was flagged down by a member of the public who said they had seen a man climbing into an area on Cotham Street, St Helens on Tuesday night.

Officers attempted to detain a suspect but as he was being taken to the police car it is alleged he attempted to headbutt and spit at the officer.

It is also alleged verbal abusive was hurled at officers.

A police spokesman said a 34-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of multiple offences, including criminal damage and possession of a controlled drug in St Helens.

He was also arrested on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker.

The arrest was made as part of Operation Target which focuses on tackling serious violence across Merseyside.

Action includes taking dangerous weapons off the streets, arresting those linked to gang and other serious crime and putting a halt to the production and distribution of drugs.
