A PLUME of smoke could be seen from miles around after a fire broke out at a recycling centre last night.
The blaze at Gatewarth Community Recycling Centre in Sankey Bridges was reported to Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service at around 7pm yesterday, Tuesday.
Three fire engines attended the scene, and discovered that an industrial skip containing electrical equipment was ‘well alight’.
Crews spent an hour and 45 minutes tackling the blaze.
Smoke from the fire could be seen and smelt from across western parts of Warrington last night.
A fire service spokesman said: “At around 7pm, firefighters attended Barnard Street following reports of a fire at a recycling site.
“On arrival the crews found a large industrial skip well alight.
“The skip contained electrical equipment.
“Water supplies were established, and a water shuttle was set up to get enough water to the area.
“Two firefighters fought the fire with hose reel jets – one of them wore breathing apparatus.
“Once the fire was out the skip was damped down to make it safe, with temperatures monitored via a thermal imaging camera.
“Firefighters were in attendance for around an hour and 45 minutes.”
