A COUNCILLOR has spoken of the "shock" felt by a community after 14-year-old Courtney Ellis died after being knocked down by a car.

Courtney Ellis, from Haydock, who was 14, died after being knocked down on Blackbrook Road, Blackbrook at about 9.50pm on Saturday.

The "bubbly" Haydock High pupil died in hospital.

Courtney's family paid heartbreaking tributes to her yesterday and her school Haydock High also posted a moving message memory of her.

Haydock ward councillor Anthony Burns said the community has been left "shocked" and offered thoughts and prayers to Courtney's family and friends.

Cllr Burns said: "It is absolutely heartbreaking to hear this awful news.

"It has shocked the whole community in Haydock and Blackbrook and all our thoughts and prayers are with her family, friends and all her classmates at Haydock High at this very sad time.

"I would urge any witnesses to please come forward."

A police investigation into Courtney's death is ongoing and anyone who witnessed the incident, or has CCTV or dashcam footage is asked to get in touch.

Two men, aged 18 and 19, who were arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving in connection with the incident, have been released under investigation as enquiries continue.
