A Tesco spokeswoman said: "The safety of our customers and colleagues is our top priority.

"We have introduced extensive measures across all our stores to help keep everyone safe, including protective screens at every checkout, social distancing signage and regular deep cleaning."

The supermarket chain has said if a Tesco worker show symptoms or tests positive for the virus then they will immediately follow the Government guidelines around isolation and will be paid in full from their first day of absence.

Social distancing measures in Tesco stores include a ‘one-in, one-out’ system in stores. We have maintained longer opening hours to minimize potential queuing.

There are floor markings in our car parks to help customers to maintain safe distances when queuing and new floor markings in store to help everyone keep a safe distance while waiting to pay.

Hand sanitisers are placed around stores for customers and staff to use, as well as extra cleaning products for customers to wipe down they trolley or basket.

Tesco has installed protective screens at the front and the back, around every checkout, so that they can open all of them and reduce the time needed to queue.

Where possible, the chain has created separate entrances and exits to its stores, so that it’s easier to keep a safe distance from other shoppers.

The chain encourages customers, who can, to use card and contactless payment methods.
