SAINTS winger Tommy Makinson has been banned for five matches after his Grade F Charge was downgraded to an E.

He has also been fined £500.

The disciplinary tribunal took into account the England wing's exemplary disciplinary record in determining the punishment.

Makinson was charged with a Grade F offence classed as “Other contrary behaviour”, in the game with Castleford Tigers on Sunday following an incident which occurred with Liam Watts in the 13th minute. The incident was sent to a tribunal to determine his penalty notice.

An RFL Operational Rules Tribunal this evening determined that the offence was Grade E, the fifth most serious of the six available categories, with Makinson’s previous good record taken into account – meaning he will miss Saints' next five matches.

The England international will miss games against Hull KR on the weekend of 29/30th August, Huddersfield, the reverse fixture against Hull KR, the Coral Challenge Cup Quarter Final against Warrington and the Saints-Wigan derby originally scheduled for 30 September.

Makinson could return for the Coral Challenge Cup Semi Final if Saints progress.

Losing the one time Golden Boot is a big blow for Saints - not simply for Makinson's try scoring prowess.

But the flank man is a key set starter for Saints who eats yards for fun and allows the forwards to get on the front foot.

With Mark Percival out injured also, this could open the door for youngsters Matty Costello, Jack Welsby and Josh Simm to take their chances for a shirt.
