POLICE say they arrested a man on suspicion of robbery and assault of a police officer in St Helens town centre.

Police say they arrested a man in connection with an alleged robbery in which a mobile phone was reportedly stolen in the town centre earlier on.

A spokeswoman said: "Merseyside Police can confirm one man has been arrested following an incident in Westfield Street, St Helens town centre in the afternoon of Wednesday, August 12).
"A 32-year-old man from St Helens was arrested on suspicion of robbery and assault of a police officer - he was taken to a police station where he remains in custody.
"This follows an earlier incident where a man had a mobile phone stolen, also in the town centre."
