TWO more arrests were made by police in connection with a street attack during which a man was stabbed in the stomach and head.

The 23-year-old victim and his girlfriend were walking along Merton Bank Road, Merton Bank shortly before 4.20am on Saturday, July 11 when a red car pulled up alongside them.

Three men got out and attacked the victim, who suffered stab wounds to the stomach and head.

He was also struck with a pool cue. 

The red saloon car then sped off towards Haresfinch.

The victim was taken to hospital for treatment to non-life threatening injuries.

Following initial investigations a 19-year-old man from Newton-le-Willows was arrested on suspicion of section 18 wounding.

Detectives have revealed he was also held on suspicion of possession of a controlled drug and possession of a psychoactive substance with intent to supply.

In a further statement police revealed they also made two other arrests. A 29-year-old man from Newton-le-Willows and a 17-year-old male from Huyton were questioned on suspicion of section 18 wounding yesterday, Sunday, July 12.

All three have since been released on conditional bail.

Throughout Saturday morning officers could be seen carrying out forensic investigations on a field off Merton Bank Road, where a cordon was put up.

In a statement police said: “Officers are keen to speak to anyone who may have seen a red saloon car being driven erratically in the area shortly before or after the incident to contact them.

“They would also like to speak to anyone who may have CCTV/dashcam footage that may help with their inquiries.
