ROAD users are being warned about a major railway bridge upgrade this summer that will lead to a series of road closures.

The Network Rail investment, as part of the Great North Rail Project, will see the railway bridge spanning Rainford Bypass (A570) refurbished and strengthened "so it remains safe and reliable for decades to come".

To safely complete the work, lane closures will be in place on Rainford Road between Mossborough Island and Lodge Lane/Bushey Lane from 5pm on Saturday July 18 until Monday, October 26.

There will also be six full road closures between 5pm on Saturday to on 6am on Monday on the following weekends:

Saturday, July 18 to Monday, July 20.

Saturday, 25 July to Monday, July 27

Saturday, September 5 to Monday, September 7

Saturday, September 12 to Monday, September 14

Saturday, October 17 to Monday, October 19

Saturday, October 24 to Monday, October 26

Network Rail says that during the weekend closures, a road diversion will be in place and will be clearly signposted. Access for pedestrians and cyclists will remain open throughout the project's duration.

Nathaly Oshodin, scheme project manager for Network Rail, said: “I’d like to thank residents and road users in advance for their patience while we complete this major upgrade to the railway bridge over the Rainford bypass.

“The Great North Rail Project investment will secure the bridge’s future for road users below and improve the reliability of rail journeys for rail passengers above.”

Work to refurbish the bridge will take place during a combination of day and night-time shifts.
