RESIDENTS have braved the rain to head out to pubs, restaurants, hairdressers and cafes today as many reopened following the easing of lockdown restrictions.

Following the government guidance, pubs, cafes restaurants and hairdressers have been able to reopen for business across the country today, Saturday, July 4.

The 'new normal' has seen punters head into their favourite pubs, like The Cricketer's Arms on Peter Street, queuing up, sitting at a distance and ordering at the table.

St Helens Star:

Those at the pub said: "It's weird being in here like this but it's nice to get out and see everyone so we don't mind really and we feel pretty safe."

St Helens Star:

Walking around the town centre, the bustle outside pubs was definitely the most noticeable change, with people adhering to the rules by waiting outside and being spaced out inside.

Cafes and restaurants have also reopened today, after changes being made to the way they operate.

St Helens Star:

One such venue is Toast on Denton's Green Lane, owner Lisa Whittle, said: "It’s been pleasing not as busy but please with how many people have come and it’s been really really positive which has been good.

"It’s about customer safety and we’ve got glass partitions between tables and everything is sanitised straight away and nothing is left of the tables.

St Helens Star:

"Everything is so different we’ve never done table service but feedback has been fantastic. The atmosphere is still here and cosy so it’s trying to implement that than taking away.

"We're 21 per cent down on capacity and have extra people on shop floor to manage the changes but I’m delighted and outside every table has umbrella so people can sit out there safely too.

"It’s been really positive so far."

St Helens Star:

They also have a signing in book and hand sanitising station.

Now the situation regarding haircuts has been pretty dire during lockdown with many growing out their hair, and others braving a home DIY cut, so it's no surprise that hairdressers have started being quite busy today.

St Helens Star:

We visited Classy Cuts on Barrow Street where owner Mandy Miller has hand sanitising stations, new disposable PPE for all customers and spaced out workspaces.
