How St Helens' coronavirus infection rate compares to Leicester and neighbouring areas

The figures, released by Press Association through Public Health England, show the rate of new cases in each area, based on tests that have been carried out in laboratories and in the wider community.

It details the number of cases per 100,000 population, for the week ending Sunday, June 21.

The figures show St Helens is towards the lower end of the table with a rate of 6.7, with neighbouring Warrington on 9.1, Knowsley 6.0 and Wigan 5.5.

Manchester has 21.6 and Liverpool has 6.3.

Leicester tops the list with 140.2.

The figures, which include tests from laboratories (‘pillar 1’ of the Government’s testing programme) and in the wider community (‘pillar 2’) aim to give a more comprehensive overview of the country than the daily figures for local areas that are published on the Department of Health website, which are based only on pillar 1 testing.

This week a vital document aimed at helping to manage future outbreaks of coronavirus in St Helens was published.

The outbreak management plan, which was published on Tuesday, aims to ensure an effective and coordinated approach for the prevention and management of COVID-19 outbreaks in St Helens.

The document says that having the plan will help create the conditions for social and economic restrictions to be safely relaxed, prevent transmission, manage outbreaks, and provide advice and reassurance.
