MP Marie Rimmer has given her support to a peaceful silent protest which is due to take place on Saturday outside St Helens Town Hall as part of the Black Lives Matter movement.

Yesterday, the Star reported how it was planned for a silent protest to be held tomorrow, Saturday, June 6 in Victoria Square.

People will support the movement and show solidarity with black and minority ethnic communities in the UK.

Strict social distancing will be in place and people are asked to wear face coverings.

The silent demonstration will follow others held elsewhere in the country as a result of ongoing protests across the US following the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis.

Mr Floyd died after a police officer knelt on his neck for more than eight minutes.

Readers reaction has been mixed, and comments led the initial organisers to back out of the protest.

However, others have now picked up the reins and the protest is set to continue tomorrow Saturday, June 6 at noon.

Marie Rimmer is also lending her support to the event, which is expected to adhere to strict social distancing.

The MP for St Helens South and Whiston said: "There will be a strictly socially distanced protest tomorrow outside St Helens Town Hall at 12pm.

"Tape will be put out to indicate how far apart to stand.

"Please come along if you can to show your support.

"It is not ideal to hold a protest in the current circumstances, but please wear a face covering and keep two metres apart from each other.

"We can safely show our solidarity for what is happening in America."

St Helens Council also lit up The Steve Prescott Bridge this week in solidarity with the #BlackOutTuesday campaign to highlight the issue.
