THE Steve Prescott Bridge is among national and international landmarks that will light up purple tonight to remember George Floyd.

The act of remembrance will begin tonight in protest at the death of the security guard in Minneapolis, US last week.

Throughout today, people across social media channels have been posting black squares as part of the #BlackOutTuesday movement, a huge protest following the death of Mr Floyd.

Floyd, who was an African American, came to the public attention last week after a video of a police officer kneeling on his neck was filmed and posted online.

Protests have taken place across the globe as a result, citing other allegations of police brutality against people of colour, particularly in the US.

St Helens Council announced that they will be lighting up the Steve Prescott Bridge purple in solidarity with the #BlackOutTuesday movement.

They said: "Tonight, the Steve Prescott Bridge will shine purple, in remembrance of George Floyd.

"We share our #BlackOutTuesday post in solidarity. Together we can be #BetterThanThat."

Other key people across the borough have backed the movement including Saints' Alex Walmsley, councillors Bisi Osundeko and Jeanie Bell.
