ROAD closures were in place this afternoon after a serious crash in Stretton.

Grappenhall Lane was shut in both directions between the junctions with Broad Lane and Cliff Lane.

This was due to an accident involving a lorry and a black Alfa Romeo shortly after 11.30am, which is thought to have been a head-on collision.

Warrington Guardian:

Diversions were put in place, and motorists were advised to avoid the area.

But the road was reopened shortly before 5pm.

Firefighters and police attended the scene, as did a helicopter according to reports.

The car driver - a man in his 50s - was rushed to Aintree Hospital after suffering serious injuries which are not believed to be life-threatening.

A Cheshire Police spokesman said: "At 11.39am on Tuesday, June 2, police were informed of a collision on Grappenhall Lane.

"Officers attended the scene and discovered that the collision involved a black Alfa Romeo car and a Mercedes HGV.

"The driver of the car was injured as a result of the incident.

"He was taken in an ambulance to Aintree Hospital with what are believed to be serious but not life-threatening injuries.

"As a result of the incident, Grappenhall Lane was closed in both directions between Broad Lane and Cliff Lane.

"The road was reopened shortly before 5pm."
