A major investment scheme at Tower Road (A554) will start next week, with plans to improve the area and lower traffic speeds.

Commencing from Monday, June 8, works within the Tower Road scheme will see the widening of pavements and reduced road width to give more space and priority to those cycling and walking.

Wirral Council says the improvements will make sustainable travel more accessible and help support increased active travel during this time.

Local Wirral-based civil engineering contractor, Cambrianway Limited, will be undertaking the work. All necessary risk assessments and safety measures have been put into place, in line with the latest government guidance.

The £3.2 million improvement scheme, designed and delivered in partnership with Peel L&P, will be delivered in two different phases of work, each with specific temporary and clearly signed traffic management arrangements.

The first phase of works will see the partial closure of Tower Wharf (Tower Road to west side of ‘Contact Company’ access).

Tower Road (Tower Quays to ‘C’ Bridge) will run under 2-way traffic lights from the start of the project and is expected to be in place until Sunday, July 19.

The second phase of works will involve a full closure of Tower Road (Tower Quays to ‘C’ Bridge) and will be in place from Monday, July 20 until the end of the project, scheduled for February 2021.

Funding for the project is made up of a successful bid from the National Productivity Investment Fund (NPIF) from the Department of Transport and local contribution from Wirral Council, Peel L&P, Wirral Waters Investment Fund and the European Structural and Investment Fund (ESIF).

Extra funding has been secured from European Structural Investment Fund (ESIF) and Wirral Waters Investment Fund (WWIF) for the planting of 130 trees.

The scheme, once completed, will create a new, improved and adaptable street design to support sustainable travel and make it more accessible.

The council has said that improvement works made in this scheme and the wider Wirral Waters development will help to support existing businesses, including Wirral Met Construction Training College and The Contact Company offices and aim to attract students, visitors and new businesses to create new job opportunities.
