Johnny Vegas judges Newton-le-Willows scarecrow competition

Newton-le-Willows held its first annual scarecrow competition, with more than 700 entries from residents,

Johnny was on hand to judge, with prizes for winners in the contest held by Newton and Earlestown Community Group.

First prize entries included 'Captain Tom' by Leslie Forshaw (above), 'Hair Couture' by Sharon Jones and 'Haydock Cancelled' by Rach Lou.

Seve Gomez-Aspron, of NECG, said: “We at NECG have delivered some big projects during lockdown such as delivering 2,500 Easter eggs to every primary school child in Newton-le-Willows, organising and coordinating Newton and Earlestown Helping Hands, and we wanted to do something that kept people at home, in the garden or house having a laugh with the kids.

"We had more than 700 entrants in the scarecrow competition which was phenomenal!"

He added: "We need to give a massive thanks to Johnny Vegas for judging the contest and providing some of the prizes and congratulations to all the winners.

"Also thanks to Daveys Acts of Random Kindness and TESCO Earlestown for donating some prizes.

"We hope to bring it back next year and keep your eye open for other lockdown projects to get involved with!”
