The Prime Minister was admitted to St Thomas’ Hospital in central London on Sunday with “persistent symptoms” of COVID-19.

He was then moved to intensive care on Monday after his condition deteriorated, although Downing Street insisted it was a precautionary measure.

A Downing Street spokesman confirmed on Tuesday that Mr Johnson is receiving standard oxygen treatment but is not currently on a ventilator.

“The Prime Minister has been stable overnight and remains in good spirits,” the spokesman said in a statement.

“He is receiving standard oxygen treatment and is breathing without any other assistance.

“He has not required mechanical ventilation or non-invasive respiratory support.”

The Prime Minister’s health scare has prompted a flood of well-wishes from across the political spectrum.

Labour MP Marie Rimmer, Labour MP for St Helens South and Whiston, is the latest opponent to offer her support for the Prime Minister.

Ms Rimmer said: “My thoughts and prayers are with the Prime Minister, his family and especially his pregnant fiancé, Carrie Symonds.

“I cannot begin to imagine what they are currently going through.

“As a country, we need Boris Johnson fit and well to help us get through this crisis.

“Boris will be getting the best treatment possible from our NHS and I know that the country will be rooting for him.”

Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab is deputising for the Prime Minister while he battles coronavirus.
