A MAN who was arrested in connection with the "unexplained death" of a woman in her 50s has been released on bail.

Emergency services were called to an address on Liverpool Row in Newton-le-Willows at around 5am on Sunday morning (March 29).

A woman was found dead at the property.

Police launched an investigation into the death, which they are treating as "unexplained".

Officers arrested a 49-year-old man from Newton-le-Willows on suspicion of murder.

A police spokeswoman said the man has been released on bail.

A post-mortem has been conducted but the cause of death has been withheld pending toxicology tests.

On Sunday, a police spokesman said: “We can confirm an investigation is underway following the unexplained death of a woman in Newton-le-Willows.

“Emergency services were called to the house on Liverpool Row at 5.05am this morning where a woman in her 50s was sadly pronounced dead.

“Her next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers at this time.

“A 49-year-old man from Newton-le-Willows has been arrested on suspicion of murder and taken to custody for questioning."
