A COMMUNITY sports club has been left devastated after a night-time break-in at its premises.

They damaged a window and door and fled the scene after the alarm went off.

It is not believed anything was stolen during the break-in.

Newton Sports Club said: "Sad to report that our voluntary-run community sports club got broken into last night.

"After trying various external doors, without success they smashed a window at the side of the club.

"They then gained entry. Couldn't get anywhere else as the alarms went off.

"They then panicked and 1 went back out the window they'd smashed and the other through the fire door in the lounge."

They added: "Absolutely gutted, not what businesses need at the moment."

After the break-in, St Helens North MP Conor McGinn tweeted: "Local people are pulling together and looking after each other.
"So it’s shocking to hear of break-ins at business, sport and community premises and pensioners’ homes.

"The criminals responsible will be caught by the police, dealt with harshly by the courts and shunned by our community."

A spokeswoman for Merseyside Police added: "We were called at 3.10am on Sunday, March 29 to reports of a burglary at Newton Sports Centre on Crow Lane East in Newton-le-Willows.

"It is believed that two males entered the premises causing damage to a door and window. An alarm was triggered and they left the scene.

"It is not clear at this stage if anything was taken.
"An investigation is underway and CCTV and forensic enquiries have been carried out."
