RESIDENTS are being urged to take advantage of the borough’s digital library as the UK goes into a strict lockdown to slow the spread of the coronavirus.

On Monday night, Boris Johnson ordered people to only leave the house to shop for basic necessities and to fulfil any medical or care needs.

The Prime Minister said people should only travel to and from work where “absolutely necessary” but did say people can leave their homes to exercise once a day.

He also ordered the closure of non-essential shops, playgrounds, outdoor gyms, places of worship and libraries.

All of the libraries and leisure centres in St Helens closed last Friday and currently there is no date set for when they will re-open.

While libraries may have closed, customers can access its digital services using their library card.

The home delivery service will also continue to provide books for elderly and vulnerable customers.

Cllr Anthony Burns, cabinet member for public health, libraries and leisure, said: “We may have had to close our libraries for now – however we are doing all we can to ensure residents have access to some of the best reading material around.

“This is a difficult time for everyone but residents are being urged to stay at home to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

“Reading is a great way to pass the time and it’s no secret that it broadens the mind, with evidence to suggest that it really can support mental health and wellbeing.

“St Helens Library Service has an extensive collection of free eBooks, comics and magazines, which are available to read online and download to computer, smartphone or tablet through digital service, Borrowbox, which has proved popular with our members.”
