SAINTS player Jack Ashworth will face a court next month accused of criminal damage and theft.

The Crown Prosecution Service is bringing charges against the forward following an alleged incident involving his former girlfriend in December 2018.

Police began an investigation following reports of an incident on December 25, 2018 at an address on Market Street in Whitworth, Lancashire.

The alleged victim was Ashworth's girlfriend, who was aged 23 at the time.

The 24-year-old, who has made 45 appearances for the club, was initially arrested before being bailed.

He has now been ordered to attend court and face charges of theft and criminal damage.

In a statement Lancashire Constabulary confirmed a 24-year-old man would be summoned to court.

The police statement added: "Following enquiries and after consultation with the Crown Prosecution Service they have now been issued with a postal requisition to attend court and face charges of theft and criminal damage."

In a statement, Ashworth's solicitor said the rugby league player wants "to make it clear that he denies the allegations made and that he intends to clear his name".

A St Helens RFC club spokesman said: “The club is aware of an allegation concerning Jack Ashworth.

“This dates back to December 2018 and no charges were brought to Jack at the time.

“We have now been made aware that in the last seven days Jack has received a summons to attend a court hearing relating to criminal damage.

“Until the case is concluded the club and the player will make no further comment.”

Ashworth is due to appear before Blackburn Magistrates' Court on April 1.
