A MAN has pleaded guilty to grievous bodily harm with intent in relation to an attack outside a pub.

Stephen Carney, 32, admitted to the attack outside the Vulcan pub in Sutton as he appeared at Liverpool Crown Court this afternoon (Tuesday, March 10) via video link.

Police were called to reports of a disturbance outside the pub on the evening of Sunday, February 9 as a 57-year-old man was taken to hospital with a head injury.

Carney was arrested and later charged in connection with the disturbance.

Wearing a black Adidas top, Carney pleaded guilty today to wounding Stuart Whittingham with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Carney, of Peckers Hill Road, Sutton had also indicated guilty pleas at an earlier hearing at Merseyside Magistrates' Court to possession of an offensive weapon, a claw hammer, at the Vulcan pub, and to possession of cocaine at Copy Lane police station on the same date.

During today's hearing Paul Blasbery, prosecuting, asked for sentencing to be adjourned for three weeks.

Judge Robert Trevor-Jones set Carney's sentencing for March 31 so "various matters can be seen to which aren't available at the moment".

He said these included a victim personal statement, medical evidence, photographs and CCTV footage.

Judge Trevor-Jones said to Carney: "You remain in custody in the mean time.

"You will receive credit for entering a guilty plea today."
